The DOST-PAGASA launches another addition to its existing Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS
) in its continuing effort to mitigate flood disasters in the country in collaboration with the Government of South Korea. It is funded under its Global Projects on Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) and is being implemented thru the Ministry of Strategy and Finance (MOSF-Korea) and the National Disaster Management Research Institute (NDMI)

The FEWS Project is entitled “Strengthening the Capability of the Republic of the Philippines on Disaster Risk Reduction”, which primary objective is to provide as much advance notice as possible of an impending flood to the authorities and the general public and to strengthen the capability on disaster risk reduction of the recipient. The project, the first of its kind in the Province of Cebu will have two (2) local government units as recipients: Toledo City and the Municipality of Dumanjug

The formal signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the DOST-PAGASA Administrator and the Chief Executives of the two recipients' local government units (LGUs) will formalize the partnership between the national and local government in partnership with the private sector through the involvement of the Toledo-based Carmen Copper Corporation (CCC), a mining corporation that offered to host/co-locate the sites of some gauging stations. These gauging stations are vital in the collection of real-time hydrometeorological data and information that serve as inputs in the formulation of warnings and advisories during actual flood early warning operations that will benefit the local communities and other stakeholders.

NDMI was also the same Korean agency that supported the same FEWS in Cagayan de Oro City after the flood disaster due to Typhoon “Sendong” which caused a great loss of lives and properties in 2011.

For more information, you may call the Project Implementer Engr. Shiela Schnieder of the Hydrometeorology Division at cell phone number +639178534819.
