PAGASA LAUNCHES SECOND PHASE OF FLOOD EARLY WARNING SYSTEMS IN

25 April 2023

DOST-PAGASA S&T Media Release
Cebu City

In its continuing effort to mitigate flood disasters in the country, DOST-PAGASA launches an addition to its current “fleet” of Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS). The FEWS is under the project officially entitled “Strengthening the Capability of the Republic of the Philippines on Disaster Risk Reduction”, a grant from the National Disaster Management and Research Institute (NDMI) of the government of South Korea.

Following the successful implementation in Toledo City and Dumanjug in 2022, the second phase will be in Danao and Argao, also in the province of Cebu as the target areas.

Before the actual implementation of the said phase, a formal signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the DOST-PAGASA and the NDMI will be held at the PAGASA Head Office in Quezon City today 25 April 2023.

NDMI is the same Korean agency that supported a similar FEWS project in Cagayan de Oro after the flood disaster in 2011 due to Typhoon Sendong, where about a thousand people perished.

After the MOA signing, the PAGASA and Korean Experts will conduct joint field works in the identified project areas. This activity will comprise site surveys for the proposed automatic gauging and warning stations and baseline data gathering for preliminary hydrological assessments.

Other activities in the six-month implementation period include hydrological surveys employing the latest technologies; installation of state-of-the-art equipment; commissioning and testing; information and education campaigns, flood drills, and mini-trainings, which will complete the package for the said project.

For more information, you may contact or call Engr. Roy A. Badilla, Chief Hydrometeorology Division at the telephone number (02) 8284-0800 local 4826.
